8 Summer Travel Packing Tips

It’s vacation season! Did you know that, according to AAA, “nearly 100 million Americans—4 in 10 U.S. adults—are planning to take a family vacation in 2019.” With so much travel happening, you’ve got to stay smart. One of the most important aspects to accomplishing this is your luggage and how you pack it. For your next vacation, we’ve compiled a list of a few summer travel packing tips along with items you should double-check are in your bag before you leave. You’ll never have to worry about not having enough room again!

1. Do laundry before you start packing

Laundry may not be fun but it’s a necessary step before you start packing. If you forgo this step, you may forget your favorite shirt that’s at the bottom of your hamper.

2. You only need one or two “dressy” outfits

Unless you know you’re going to need more, don’t overpack the dressy outfits. Chances are you’ll only need one or two formal looks, so you don’t need it taking up extra luggage space.

3. Pack by outfit

Before you fill your suitcase or backpack, lay out your outfit for each day of the trip—that includes underwear and socks. This will ensure that you don’t overpack.

4. Bring versatile clothes

As you’re laying out your outfits, think about what pieces you can wear more than once. That may mean only two pairs of shorts for your trip. The more you can utilize an item the more space you’ll have for other essentials.

5. Roll clothing for extra space

Rolling up your clothes is another trick to saving space in your luggage. You may not want to do this for your dressier pieces, but if you’re going on a hiking trip, rolling your clothing will save you a lot of space.

6. Have a dedicated travel-only toiletry bag

Keep a travel-only toiletry bag on hand. This will hold all the essentials you need: toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, small body wash, shampoo and conditioner bottles, and contact solution and containers. Having this bag on hand will ensure that you always have what you need.

7. Bring half of what you packed

For international travel, after you’ve laid out your outfits—cut them in half. Removing half of what you initially decide to pack will help you figure out what you truly need for your trip and focus in on the essentials.

8. Be selective about footwear

You don’t need to bring every shoe in your closet. Ditch the shoes that you’ll only wear for one day. Think of wearing your comfy and most versatile pair, then pack two additional options. A pair of walking/hiking/athletic shoes and one dressier pair should do the trick.
