Why do we celebrate the Fourth of July?

The American Independence Day tradition has its roots in the 18^th century. On July 2, 1776 the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence . Two days later, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a national holiday in the United States since 1941. Today the 4^th of July is a day of celebration for the country. Festivities range from barbeques, beach/lake trips, parades, concerts, and fireworks. 

When did patriotic clothing become a thing?

Every year, around the Fourth of July we find ourselves asking: Why are we Americans obsessed with our patriotic apparel? You can find anything with the flag on it from t-shirts to bathing suits to overalls. Rocking your American flag apparel is a relatively new fad, but one that has its roots in the start of our country. 

The first versions of the flag were flown for military purposes throughout the late eighteenth century. It wasn’t until the post-Civil War era that the flag became more ubiquitous. By the late 1800s, the patriotic era of printing flags on advertisements and goods came to be for products that live up to the American spirit. Over the next few decades the flag became associated with the ideals of the American Dream and opportunity. The 1970’s saw presidential candidates wearing lapel pins, the Vietnam war that both united and divided people, and the hippies’ bold fashions. Patriotic clothing remained popular after that and even more prominent in the 90s as patriotism was on the rise in the fashion world. 9/11 had a dramatic effect on making the American flag a constant symbol of patriotism and pride in both fashion and everyday culture.
